Emergency pathway
Illegal lockout, padlocks, and “self-help” eviction
A landlord in Ontario generally cannot lock you out, seize your keys, or dump your belongings without an LTB eviction order that the Sheriff (Court Enforcement Office) carries out. Changing the locks to keep you out is a tenant-rights violation. Go back with this letter, call a clinic, and consider an urgent T2. If you are in danger, call 911.
10–20 min Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 s. 39, ss. 22–35 Criminal law may also apply
