Duty to accommodate

Accessibility is not a courtesy upgrade.

The Code requires housing providers to remove barriers linked to disability, family status, creed, and other grounds up to undue hardship. AODA standards never shrink that duty.

Ask in writing

You do not need a perfect medical essay. You need enough information to show the barrier and the needed change. The provider may request relevant documentation — not your entire chart.

  • Service animals and support persons
  • Transfer to an accessible unit
  • Quiet-hours exceptions for medical equipment or family caregiving
  • Communication in large print, plain language, or an interpreter
  • Time-limited rent plans tied to benefit deposit dates

If they refuse, file at the HRTO and, where the same facts are harassment or interference with enjoyment, consider a T2. OHRC tenant brochure.
