AODA and accessible housing services

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act sets standards for accessible customer service and information. The Code still does the heavy lifting on accommodation.

The AODA and its Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR) require accessible customer service, information, employment, and (in stages) the built environment from obligated organizations — including many housing providers, municipalities, and tribunals.

AODA is a floor. The Human Rights Code duty to accommodate is often broader. If a portal, a hearing, a wait-list office, or a shelter cannot be used because of a disability, ask for accommodation in writing. Use the accommodation pathway.

Complaints about AODA compliance can go to the Accessibility Directorate; individual discrimination still goes to the HRTO.
